Mind's
Activity (drop-in) Centres
A high priority is being given to supporting people in the community who have enduring mental health difficulties. Activity centres make an important contribution to meeting this need. Two centres have been opened. Their primary purpose is to provide a friendly and supportive environment where people can assist each other and gain ready access to professional help. They combine some of the recreational features of a social club, but with more focused therapeutic and educational activities. User involvement in developing and implementing operational policy is encouraged.
Potential centre members must demonstrate that they have mental health difficulties in order to attend and this is usually done, in the case of self referral, by an interview with the relevant centre leader. Alternatively, a referral from a care professional will be acceptable.
At present we have two Activity Centres - Mansfield and Kirkby.
Mansfield Activity Centre is located at Concord House on St. John Street. The Project Leader is assisted by a small team of sessional workers and, occasionally, social work students.
A cooked meal is provided at each session. A small charge is made for this and beverages.
