Family Support Scheme

Established in the late 1970s, the Family Support Scheme supports carers who have relatives with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia. The scheme used to offer a 'sitting' service, but was changed in favour of day centres in key locations throughout Central Notts. We have 12 centres offering a total of 235 one-day-a-week places.

Activities:
Each centre runs a programme of short-duration activities including chair-based music and movement, reminiscence therapy and other activities suitable for both men and women.

Staffing:
A good staffing level ensures a safe environment for service users and one in which their dependency needs can be met. Normally a supervisor, 2 - 4 care assistants and up to 2 or 3 volunteers are present at each centre, giving a ratio of approximately one helper to 3 older people.

Transport:
Home to centre transport with escort is provided, picking up service users from around 9-00 am and returning them home in the early afternoon.

Cost to Service User:
There is a minimum charge to the service user which covers the cost of refreshments and subsidised 'cooked chilled' meals.

How to refer to the service:
Referrals may be made directly to the scheme organiser by health care and social services professionals. The Organiser will make a home assessment visit which, if appropriate, will lead to a decision to offer a place at one of the centres.
